Edgefield County SC Marriage License: Where to Go and What to Ask First

Edgefield County issues marriage licenses from one office, the Probate Court at 129 Courthouse Square, Suite 212, in the town of Edgefield. To get an Edgefield County SC marriage license you apply there, wait the 24 hours South Carolina requires, and collect the license before your ceremony. Simple enough. The catch is that the county's website tells you where the court is and when it is open, and not much else.

So this guide has two halves: what we could confirm on official pages, and what to ask when you call. We would rather send you to the phone than guess at a fee.

What does the county confirm about an Edgefield County SC marriage license?

The Edgefield County Probate Court page says the court handles the application and issuance of marriage licenses, and it lists these details:

  • Office: 129 Courthouse Square, Suite 212, Edgefield, SC 29824

  • Mailing address: PO Box 45, Edgefield, SC 29824

  • Phone: 803-637-4076

  • Office hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Fees and hours here were checked in October 2026 and courts do change them, so call before you drive over. That goes double if you are driving in from Johnston or Trenton on a lunch break.

What should you ask when you call the Probate Court?

The county does not publish its license fee, the kinds of payment it takes, or the latest time of day it accepts applications. A two minute call settles all of it. Here is our list:

  • What is the marriage license fee, and can we pay with cash, a card, or a check?

  • How late in the day do you take applications?

  • Do we both need to come in, and exactly which ID and Social Security documents do you want?

  • After the 24 hours, can one of us pick up the license alone?

  • How much is a certified copy, and can we order one when we bring the license back?

What does South Carolina law require?

The statewide rules apply in Edgefield like anywhere else. The application has to be signed by both of you and it asks for your Social Security numbers. The court cannot issue the license until at least 24 hours after the application is filed. Applicants between 18 and 25 have to show proof of age. There is no residency requirement and no blood test.

In practice, plan on going together with a photo ID and a Social Security card each, and confirm that list on the phone. If either of you is under 18, call first, because consent and birth certificate rules apply.

The wait is what trips up Augusta area couples, because Georgia has none. An Edgefield County SC marriage license applied for on a Friday will not be ready until the court reopens the next week, so work backward from your wedding date.

We live in North Augusta. Which county do we use?

Most of North Augusta is in Aiken County, and part of it reaches into Edgefield County. You do not have to work out which side of the line your house is on. South Carolina has no residency requirement, and a license from any county's probate court can be used anywhere in the state. An Edgefield County SC marriage license and an Aiken County one work equally well, so pick the courthouse that is easier to reach.

For many North Augusta couples that is Aiken. The Aiken County Probate Court is at the Judicial Center, 109 Park Avenue, Aiken, and the license there is $45. Our Aiken County marriage license guide has the rundown. One warning: a South Carolina license can only be used in South Carolina. If your ceremony is in Augusta you need a Georgia license, and our Richmond County guide covers that.

Who is allowed to perform the ceremony?

South Carolina is stricter here than most couples expect. The rule is S.C. Code Section 20-1-20. It names ministers of the Gospel, Jewish rabbis, officers authorized to administer oaths in the state, and the chief or spiritual leader of a recognized Native American Indian entity. Nobody else is authorized to perform a marriage in South Carolina, so a friend or relative generally cannot officiate unless they fall into one of those groups.

Augusta Officiant is licensed to officiate in Georgia and South Carolina. We also carry a business license and $2 million in liability insurance. Many venues around Augusta now ask officiants for both, and more are expected to. Their worry is practical: an officiant who does not show up, or paperwork filled out wrong so the marriage is not recorded properly.

What happens to the license after the wedding?

Your license comes in three copies. Both of you sign all three, exactly as your names appear. The officiant fills in the officiant lines and the date. When we marry you, we complete and sign the license at the ceremony and hand it straight back to you. You keep the original. The other two copies must be back at the Probate Court within 15 days of the ceremony, and you return them yourselves, in person or by mail. Doing it yourselves gets your recorded license back faster. While you are there, ask for certified copies. You will need them for a name change, and military couples need one for DEERS enrollment.

What does an officiant cost for an Edgefield County wedding?

Once you have your Edgefield County SC marriage license, the ceremony can be as small or as full as you like. Our Elopement Ceremony is $200. It is short, with a set script, standard vows, and a ring exchange, for up to 20 guests and no rehearsal. Our Custom Ceremony is $400. It is written from scratch for the two of you, with one planning meeting beforehand, and we attend the rehearsal. Payment plans are available on every package. Split the $400 over 6 months and it is about $67 a month. Tell us where in Edgefield County you are planning and we will give you a quote for your location. The packages page lays it all out.

We are a veteran owned, family run team that has married more than 1,200 couples across the CSRA. Our fees support the Augusta Birth Center, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
