How Long Is a Wedding Ceremony? Typical Times by Ceremony Type
Twenty minutes is a fair middle. If you came here asking how long is a wedding ceremony, most of the ones we perform run between 15 and 30 minutes, measured from the first step down the aisle to the walk back up it.
The range is wide because the word ceremony covers a lot. A legal signing at a kitchen table and a full religious service are both weddings. We are Augusta Officiant, we have married more than 1,200 couples around Augusta, Evans, Grovetown, and Aiken, and this is what we have seen on the clock.

How long is a wedding ceremony by type?
Ask ten officiants how long is a wedding ceremony and you will hear ten answers, so treat these as typical ranges from our own experience. Yours can sit outside them and be perfectly fine.
License signing with no ceremony: a few minutes
Elopement or other short ceremony with a set script: about 10 minutes
Personalized ceremony with your story, vows, and rings: 15 to 25 minutes
The same ceremony with a reading and a unity ritual added: 25 to 30 minutes
Religious ceremony that includes a full worship service: 45 minutes to an hour, sometimes longer
If your ceremony is part of a religious service, ask your clergy about their usual timing. Traditions differ a great deal.
What makes a ceremony run long?
Almost always the extras, and each one looks small by itself. When a couple asks us how long is a wedding ceremony going to feel for their guests, this is the list we go through with them.
A large wedding party or a long aisle, since every pair walking in adds time
Readings, at 2 to 3 minutes each
A unity ritual such as sand or a candle, at 2 to 5 minutes
Personal vows that grew from one minute to four
A song performed live in the middle, which is often 3 minutes or more of everyone standing still
A ceremony in two languages
None of these are bad choices. Just make them on purpose. Two extras feel generous. Five can feel like a recital.
What keeps a ceremony short?
A set script, standard vows, a small wedding party, and a couple who would rather get to the party. Where your guests will be matters too. An outdoor ceremony in an Augusta July is a strong argument for 15 minutes. So is a room where half the guests are standing.
Starting on time helps more than cutting content. A ceremony that begins 20 minutes late feels long before a word is spoken.
Is a short ceremony too short?
No. Guests rarely complain that a ceremony was brief. What they remember is whether it sounded like the two of you. Twelve minutes with one true, specific paragraph about how you met does more than 40 minutes of filler.
If you worry that short will feel rushed, slow the processional down and take your time with the vows. Those are the parts people watch most closely, and a pause there reads as calm instead of slow.
How much time should we block on the wedding timeline?
Block 30 minutes for a ceremony you expect to last 20. Ceremonies often start 5 to 10 minutes after the printed time because guests are still parking and finding seats. Some couples print a time 15 minutes ahead of when they truly plan to walk. Either way, tell your photographer and your caterer the real plan.
If building the timeline sounds like a chore, that is part of what our day of coordination covers, along with confirming vendors and running the wedding day. It can be combined with officiating. Ask for a quote.
What do our ceremonies cost, and how long do they run?
With us, the answer to how long is a wedding ceremony depends on which one you book. A License Signing has no ceremony at all, just the legal signing, at $60 when you come to us or $100 when we meet you anywhere in Augusta or Richmond County. The Elopement Ceremony is $200. It is a short ceremony with a set script, standard vows, and a ring exchange, for up to 20 guests. The Custom Ceremony is $400 and written from scratch for you, so its length is something we can settle together at your planning meeting. We also attend your rehearsal.
You can split any of these into as many payments as you like with a payment plan. Whichever you choose, we carry a business license and $2 million in liability insurance, which many venues now ask to see. The details are on our wedding services page.
How long is a wedding ceremony FAQ
How long should our vows be?
About a minute each, which is roughly 120 to 150 words read slowly. Agree on a length together so one of you does not read a paragraph while the other reads three pages.
How early should guests arrive?
Most guests arrive 15 to 30 minutes before the printed time. Have music playing and seats ready by then.
Does a bilingual ceremony take twice as long?
It does not have to. Many bilingual ceremonies switch languages by section instead of repeating every line, so they run a few minutes longer. Our team performs ceremonies in English and Spanish.
How long does it take to sign the marriage license?
A few minutes. We complete and sign it right after the ceremony and hand it to you. You return it to the probate court yourselves, and in Georgia it must be back within 30 days.
Can we get married without a ceremony at all?
Yes. Georgia has no waiting period and requires no witnesses, so once you have your marriage license, a License Signing takes care of the legal part in a few minutes. It is often possible the same day.
Want a ceremony that fits your timeline?
