Fulton County Marriage License: Where Atlanta Couples Apply and What It Costs

You can apply for a Fulton County marriage license at three probate court offices: downtown Atlanta, Sandy Springs, and College Park. Both of you go together with ID, there is no waiting period, and the court posts a fee of $68.50, or $28.50 with a premarital education certificate.

What trips Atlanta couples up is the fine print. One office takes cash and the others do not. Appointments are a downtown thing. And the signed license goes back by mail. Here is all of it, checked against the county's own pages.

Where can you apply for a Fulton County marriage license?

Fulton County's customer service page lists three Probate Court locations for marriage licenses:

  • Fulton County Probate Court, 136 Pryor Street, Suite C-230, Atlanta. Phone 404-612-4640.

  • North Service Center, 7741 Roswell Road, Suite 219, Sandy Springs. Phone 404-613-7638.

  • South Service Center, 5600 Stonewall Tell Road, Suite 218, College Park. Phone 404-612-3048.

In its entry on weapons permits, the same page shows these Probate Court offices open 8:30 to 4:00, Monday to Friday, so confirm license hours with the office you choose. A warning about the north office: the court's website has carried a notice that the North Fulton location was closed for renovation, with no reopening date shown. Call 404-613-7638 before you head to Sandy Springs. Fees and hours here were checked in October 2026 and courts do change them, so call before you drive over.

Do you need an appointment?

It depends on the office. Appointments for a Fulton County marriage license are offered at the downtown location and nowhere else. The North and South Service Centers do not require one and take walk ins, who are seen in the order they arrive. If downtown suits you better, book ahead through the court's marriage license page or call first to ask about walk ins.

How much is the license, and how can you pay?

The court's page posts a fee of $68.50, or $28.50 if you bring a Certificate of Completion from a qualified premarital education program. It says the fee includes one certified copy of your marriage certificate, mailed to you. The course has to be completed together, within the 12 months before you apply. One wrinkle: an older section further down the same page still shows a lower amount, so confirm the fee when you call. Fees are nonrefundable.

How you pay depends on where you go. Credit, debit, and prepaid cards are accepted at all locations. Cash is accepted downtown and nowhere else, so do not arrive in College Park with a roll of twenties.

What do you need to bring?

  • Both of you, in person, with current ID

  • Proof of age: a valid driver's license, an original or certified birth certificate, a valid passport, or a valid military ID

  • A copy of your final divorce decree, if either of you was divorced within the past 90 days

  • Your premarital education certificate, if you are claiming the lower fee

  • A card, or cash if you are applying downtown

If at least one of you lives in Georgia, you can apply in any Georgia county. If neither of you does, the license must come from the county where the ceremony takes place. Not every Atlanta address is in Fulton County, so out of state couples should confirm their venue's county before applying. The court says a Fulton County marriage license has no expiration date, and like any Georgia license it must be used in Georgia.

Can you get married at the Fulton County courthouse?

Yes, on Fridays. The probate court offers free ceremonies every Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no appointment, for couples who hold a Fulton County marriage license. You can bring up to 6 guests. Confirm the location with the court before you go.

That is a good fit for couples who want it done simply. It does not help much if you want a Saturday, a park, a backyard, a seventh guest, or vows that sound like the two of you. We compared the two routes in courthouse wedding in Atlanta vs hiring an officiant.

What does an officiant cost in Atlanta?

Our package prices are the same all year, and Atlanta adds a $200 travel fee. The Elopement Ceremony is $200: a short ceremony with a set script, standard vows, and a ring exchange, for up to 20 guests. The Custom Ceremony is $400, written from scratch for you, with a planning meeting by Zoom or FaceTime and our attendance at your rehearsal. In Atlanta that comes to $600 with travel, or about $50 a month over 12 months, because payment plans cover travel too. Our fees support the Augusta Birth Center, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

We are Augusta Officiant, based in Augusta, with more than 1,200 couples married. We are licensed to officiate in Georgia and South Carolina and hold a business license and $2 million in liability insurance, which matters because more venues now ask officiants for both. A friend can get ordained online in minutes. The business license and the insurance policy are much harder to come by.

How do you return the license and get certified copies?

At the ceremony we complete and sign the license and hand it to you. Fulton accepts completed licenses by mail and no other way, so you mail it yourselves to the Fulton County Probate Court, 136 Pryor Street SW, 2nd Floor, Atlanta, GA 30303. Copy the attention line from the instructions the court gives you. Georgia law gives you 30 days from the ceremony, but sooner is better, since your certified copy is mailed after the court records the license.

Extra copies for a name change or DEERS are $10 each by mail. Send the court's Marriage Certificate Request Form with a self addressed stamped envelope and a money order payable to Fulton County Probate Court. The court lists 404-612-4693 for questions about certified copies.
