Where is the Jefferson County probate court?

The Jefferson County Probate Court is at 202 East Broad Street in Louisville, Georgia 30434. You can reach them at 478-625-3258.

The court's marriage license page lists application hours of 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. That lunch gap is real, so don't plan your visit for 12:15.

How do I apply for a marriage license in Jefferson County, GA?

Start online. The county asks couples to complete the application at georgiaprobaterecords.com before scheduling an appointment. Walk ins are accepted, but the court says to expect a wait of roughly 30 to 40 minutes.

Then, a few rules worth writing on a sticky note:

  • You both have to come in together. No exceptions for busy work weeks.

  • Apply no more than 30 days before your wedding date, according to the county's marriage license page.

  • Bring government issued ID with your current address, such as a driver's license, state ID, military ID, or passport. Work IDs are not accepted. A birth certificate can serve as proof of age.

How much is a marriage license in Jefferson County?

Here are the county's posted fees:

  • Marriage license without premarital education: $66

  • Marriage license with a premarital education certificate: $30

  • Additional certified copies: $10 each

The court accepts cash, money orders, cashier's checks, and credit or debit cards.

Is the premarital education discount worth it?

If you have the time, it saves you $36. Georgia's discount requires at least six hours of premarital education from a qualified provider, and you bring the certificate when you apply. A lot of couples just pay the full fee and spend those six hours on seating charts instead. No judgment.

Do we have to live in Jefferson County?

Georgia has no residency requirement and no waiting period. Georgia residents can get a license in any Georgia county and use it anywhere in the state.

If neither of you lives in Georgia, the rule changes. Non residents need to get the license in the county where the ceremony will happen. So if you're coming in from South Carolina for a farm wedding outside Wrens, Jefferson County is your stop.

And remember, a Georgia license only works in Georgia. If you're thinking about a ceremony across the river in Aiken or North Augusta, you'll need a South Carolina license instead, which comes with a 24 hour wait.

Who can sign a Georgia marriage license?

Georgia law, O.C.G.A. § 19-3-30, allows judges, magistrates, city recorders, and ministers or other persons authorized by their religious society to perform a marriage. After the wedding, the officiant has to return the completed license to the probate court within 30 days.

That last part is where things go sideways. We've heard the stories: a cousin who forgot to mail it, a friend who signed in the wrong spot, a license that sat in a glovebox until it was too late. The wedding was beautiful, but the marriage never got recorded.

Why do so many venues now require a professional officiant?

Across the CSRA, and especially at Richmond County venues, more and more wedding venues now require officiants to carry both a business license and a liability insurance policy. They've had friends and family officiants not show up, break the rules, or fill out the paperwork wrong, and the couple paid the price. Small venues out in Jefferson County are starting to ask the same questions.

Augusta Officiant has both. We hold a business license and carry $2 million in liability coverage, making us the only fully insured officiant in the CSRA. We've officiated more than 500 ceremonies, and we make sure every license is signed correctly and returned on time.
